BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH

AFAL in support of research… because they represent our hope.

Only once the aetiology of Alzheimer’s has no secrets for us will we be able to start speaking of prevention and cure. For this reason AFAL Contigo provides support, especially, for basic research that seeks the causes of Alzheimer’s and that necessitates “altruistic funding” to be carried out.

AFAL Contigo collaborates in the following research projects:

-         Search for genes susceptible to Alzheimer’s disease. Fernando Valdivieso and María Jesús Bullido. Molecular Biology Centre Severo Ochoa, Autonomous University of Madrid.

-         Creation of a bank of lymphoblasts of patients with Alzheimer’s disease and controls for the study of susceptible genes. Ana Frank y Mª Jesús Bullido. University Hospital La Paz and Molecular Biology Centre Severo Ochoa. Autonomous University of Madrid.

-         Repercussion of the lack of vitamin B12 and follate in cerebrovascular accidents. Dr Marcela González Gross. Polytechnic University of Madrid.

-         Alzheimer’s Clinical Trial, phase III. San Carlos Clinical University Hospital, Madrid.

-         Contributions of Magnetoencephalography to the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Tomás Ortiz et al. Magnetoencephalography Centre Dr. Pérez Modrego. Complutense University of Madrid.

-         Permanent collaboration with the Bank of Tissues for Neurological Investigation of Madrid.

Furthermore, AFAL Contigo has created the following research support instruments:

-         AFAL-INCCA: Database of dementia sufferers as well as relative care givers, created with the technical collaboration of ACCENTURE, which includes details concerning clinical, social, assistance and other aspects destined to help dementia researchers.

Patient Associations in support of Biomedical Research: Investigating today to cure tomorrow, Program. The purpose of this program is to diffuse, from AFAL, information regarding the beneficial aspects of research for patients’ associations, as well as on possible forms of participation. With the collaboration of the CIEN Foundation of the Ministry of Health.
