What is Alzheimer´s Disease?
Home > What is Alzheimer´s Disease?

It is an irreversible neurodegenerative disease whose cause is unknown, which attacks the brain producing critical deterioration of cognitive, behavioural and motor functions thus condemning its sufferer to depend on a carer all 24 hours.

It is the most frequent form of dementia. It does not constitute a part of the regular ageing process, nor is it contagious or hereditary (except for a small percentage of cases – less than 5% - the great majority of cases are those known as “sporadic”). It is an illness that is linked to old age and there are about 800,000 sufferers in Spain at present.

As can be seen by the facts exposed, this illness situates us in the midst of a bitter reality, aggravated by sombre prospects of future growth in numbers.

Nevertheless, AFAL faces these prospects with realistic optimism and the belief that eventually scientific investigation will conquer this disease that STRIKES THE BRAIN OF THE SUFFERER AND THE HEARTS OF HIS OR HER FAMILY. Meanwhile, AFAL will continue its effort as part of that great social movement for mutual help between human beings who suffer. Not in vain, ALZHEIMERS IS SPELLED WITH “A” FOR “AYUDA”, MEANING, “HELP”.
